Get London Reading: Standard campaign wins top charity award for being ?simple but effective?

At the Institute of Fundraising National Awards the GLR campaign was named the Best Large Business-Charity Partnership for the ?unique and innovative? collaboration between the London Evening Standard and Beanstalk.

The other short-listed finalists for the prestigious ?large campaigns over ?1 million? category, sponsored by GoGen, were initiatives by the British Red Cross and Marie Curie Cancer Care. The ceremony last night at the Hilton London Metropole was hosted by Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and attended by more than 700 people from charities nationwide. The award was picked up by our campaigns editor David Cohen and Beanstalk?s chief executive Sue Porto.

The judges voted unanimously for Get London Reading and said: ?It is a simple but brilliant model that had never been done and yet succeeded beyond all expectations. We think it could be replicated in other cites.?

The campaign was lauded for raising awareness of the issue of literacy and raising the profile of the charity Beanstalk, as well as securing ?1 million and acquiring 600 volunteers. Judges said: ?The London Evening Standard featured hard-hitting articles and used its networks and profile to engage with businesses and philanthropists. The proposition was simple and effective ? ?volunteer today, donate today ? and change lives?.?

Launched two years ago, Get London Reading is a four-year programme that helps more than 2,000 children in more than 200 schools. Our biggest donor is ?500,000 by the Mayor?s Fund for London.
